Machining before and after coating

Coated components pass through the machine shop twice. Before coating, the area to be coated is machined undersize so the finished coating sits flush with the surrounding surface. After coating, the hard layer is ground to final size and finish.

Grinding hard coatings

Tungsten carbide and ceramic coatings are too hard for ordinary abrasive wheels and are ground with diamond. Doing the coating and the grinding in one facility means the coating thickness can be planned around the grinding allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an undercut machined before coating?

An undercut is machined before coating so that the coating has room to sit. The area is cut undersize by the planned coating thickness; after spraying and grinding, the coating is at full thickness and flush with the uncoated surface beside it, with no step or thin edge.

Can valve balls be ground after coating?

Yes. After HVOF coating, valve balls are finished by spherical grinding, which brings the coated surface to a true sphere of the required diameter. The ball is then lapped with its seats to give the matched sealing surfaces.

What should I specify for a ground finish?

For a ground finish, specify the surface roughness, the dimensional tolerance and any geometric requirement, such as roundness, flatness or concentricity, on the drawing. For coated parts, also state the minimum coating thickness that must remain after grinding.
