Ceramic Coated Metal Sleeves

A ceramic coated metal sleeve is a steel sleeve with a thermally sprayed ceramic layer on its running surface. Fitted over a pump shaft under the packing or seal, it takes the wear in place of the shaft. Ultraweld Coat manufactures them in Pune with chrome oxide, alumina titania and aluminium oxide coatings.

We are leading Ceramic Coated Metal Sleeves manufacturer in Pune, at Ultraweld Coat Pvt.Ltd. we are also Supplier, Exporter, and Service Provider with our setup located in Pune, Maharashtra, India.

What is a ceramic coated metal sleeve?

A ceramic coated sleeve is a metal sleeve, usually stainless or alloy steel, whose working surface carries a thermally sprayed layer of oxide ceramic that is then ground and polished. The metal body gives strength and an accurate fit on the shaft; the ceramic gives a very hard, chemically inert running surface. On a pump the sleeve sits under the gland packing or seal, so it takes the wear instead of the shaft and can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of a new shaft.

Ceramic coating options for sleeves

CoatingCharacterTypical use
Chrome oxide (Cr2O3)Very hard and dense, with excellent wear and chemical resistance and low friction against packingPump sleeves, shaft seal areas, flingers
Alumina titania (Al2O3 + TiO2)Tougher than plain alumina and takes a fine finishIdler pulleys and guides for textile and wire drawing, godet rolls
Aluminium oxide (Al2O3)High hardness with very high electrical resistanceParts that must insulate electrically as well as resist wear

Why pump manufacturers specify coated sleeves

  • Shaft protection: abrasive particles that lodge in the packing cut the sleeve surface, not the shaft.
  • Longer packing life: a hard, smooth surface runs with less friction and holds its finish, so leakage stays under control.
  • Corrosion resistance: oxide ceramics are unaffected by most process fluids that attack bare steel.
  • Lower lifetime cost: a worn sleeve can often be stripped, re-coated and re-ground rather than scrapped.

Choosing the right sleeve coating

The choice depends on the fluid, the solids it carries and how hot the sleeve runs. Ceramic coatings perform best where the sleeve is kept cool by a controlled leakage through the packing. If the sleeve may run dry or see sharp temperature swings, a tungsten carbide coating tolerates the heat and shock better. Our team can recommend a coating for your pump application, and sleeves are finished in our own grinding shop.

What we need to quote

  • A drawing or sample sleeve, with the base material
  • The length and diameter of the area to be coated
  • The fluid handled, its temperature and whether it carries solids
  • Required surface finish, tolerance and quantity

Frequently asked questions

Can a worn ceramic coated sleeve be re-coated?

In many cases, yes. If the steel body of the sleeve is sound, the worn ceramic is stripped, a new layer is thermally sprayed and the sleeve is ground back to its original diameter and finish. Re-coating a sleeve usually costs much less than replacing it.

Ceramic or tungsten carbide for a pump sleeve?

Ceramic offers excellent wear and chemical resistance at lower cost where the sleeve stays cool. Tungsten carbide is the safer choice where the sleeve can overheat, run dry or take impact.

How is the coated surface finished?

A ceramic coated sleeve is finished by grinding and polishing. The sprayed ceramic is ground with diamond wheels to the drawing diameter, then polished to the smooth finish that the gland packing or lip seal needs in order to run on it without wearing quickly or leaking.
